Nothin' but Grief!
I get nothin' but grief!
I never am very trustworthy of international weather forecasts, but for some reason I am watching Japan's. Suddenly a couple days ago it jumped up 10-15 degrees (out of the historical norm), which meant a last minute repacking shuffle. I have literally never packed a suitcase just hours from departure, but that is exactly what I found myself doing just now. Uncertain spring weather means you have to pack for rain, cold, and heat - which is way too much clothes "just in case." Chris overheard me say, "It was 29 degrees today" and wanted to go completely rethink his wardrobe. I assured him he is fine (he has a rain jacket, a puffy jacket, long sleeves and short sleeves)! So sarcastic Greg chimes in, "And when we go kayaking, you don't need any sunscreen" - in reference to the bright red legs Jeremy and Chris (only them, mind you) got after my great advice on one of our last trips. Poke fun at me all you want, but I love the travel memories that we make together! (This memory gives me a chuckle and warm fuzzies every time.)

forecast historical
Our amazing Kyoto weather forecast for the next week
Since the weather changed so drastically, so did the cherry blossom forecast ... it has moved up a week. Today is prime for blooms in Tokyo which means we should hit some pretty good blooms in Kyoto (the latter bloomer) - where we are spending most of our time. The irony, to me, is that my cherry tree is about to bloom; I am going to miss my own yard's most beautiful display of the year!
The irony of our trip is that we will miss our own cherry tree blooming
Getting ready to leave, I am surprised at how I feel as I make the transition from sure-footed (though fantasy) planning mode to reality. One thing I know is that I am super relieved that Jeremy made it home safely from college. I am feeling a bit anxious, like I'm either forgetting something big or about to make a stupid mistake ... you'll have to check back each day to see which one it is ;)
As it turns out, you can never be perfect...every trip I learn something new (aka make a mistake). Last night I set my alarm for 1am so I could check into our flight. Restless until then, I got up to try to check in; sure enough, I had to wait 32 more minutes. Then I read the fine-print (I'm horrible with reading fine-print): "e-checkin" is 48-hours in advance. To me, "e" should mean "internet" but in actuality it is the airline's app. So at 12:30am, I download the app and am successfully able to check in, which I wish I did at a reasonable hour!
This won't be my only learning experience on the trip. I love this about traveling. I love experiencing new things with my family. I love that we are about to go on an amazing exploration together. I.LOVE.LIFE. And I am thankful you are a part of my life... Let's Go!
